Traumatic brain injury (TBI), also known as concussion, is an abrupt injury that causes injury to the brain. It can occur when there's a direct blow, jolt, or shock to the head. This is generally a closed skull injury. A closed TBI can also occur when an object penetrating the skull. Regardless of where a TBI occurs, it usually results in a physical change to the victim's behavior, along with symptoms ranging from mild to severe. A personal injury attorney can help.

When there is a trauma to the brain, part of it is removed, along with some of the tissue and the part that is not replaced, is lost. These pieces of tissue fragments are called a deficit and are usually permanent. Some people may recover partial functions of their brain through time, while others suffer permanent disabilities. Damage to the blood vessels near the scalp is another result of a traumatic brain injury. When blood is cut off from the scalp and travels to areas of the brain, there can be damage to these blood vessels. In rare cases, the blood vessels may burst, resulting in death from asphyxiation.

Headaches and dizziness are the most common symptoms associated with a mild traumatic brain injury. More serious problems such as seizures and depression may occur in some victims. The longer this type of injury goes untreated, the more likely it is that it will cause severe disabilities and death over time. Left untreated, a traumatic brain injury may cause death within months.

The long-term effects of these types of injuries are wide and varied. Because they result in such wide-ranging problems, many victims are unable to work in their careers or hold down a job and have to live on a fixed income. They also may suffer from psychological symptoms such as memory loss and depression. These problems become more acute as time passes, making it impossible to prevent them from occurring.

A traumatic brain injury can often lead to more severe medical conditions that require hospitalization and extensive therapy. Some victims experience long-term symptoms like learning disorders, memory loss, depression, anxiety, and behavioral changes. If not treated, these symptoms can lead to even more dangerous conditions like schizophrenia and other mood disorders.

As long as a traumatic brain injury is classified as a severe blow to the skull, it cannot be proven to be the cause of a particular loss or disease. The only way to determine if you have had a TBI is by consulting with a qualified physician. A qualified doctor will be able to perform tests like CAT scans and MRIs to look at the inside of your brain and to see if anything has happened to it. It is possible that something that would have prevented normal function has caused a problem. This could be due to brain damage caused by an underlying illness or to some other catastrophic event.
